Did you know that Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express allow you to set a credit card minimum purchase amount? That means you can tell customers that they can’t use their credit cards unless they’re spending a certain amount. However, there are some requirements that must be met before you can set a minimum.

Elavon, your processor, requires that you give your customers the option of paying by debit or credit before setting a minimum purchase. This means you must accept PIN debit at your location and give your customers the choice to pay by debit card. If the customer still chooses to pay by credit card, then you are allowed to set a minimum purchase amount.

How much can you set as your minimum credit card purchase amount? According to Visa and MasterCard rules, you can set a minimum of ten dollars or less. For example, if you set the minimum at ten dollars and the customer spends less than ten dollars, you don’t have to accept their credit card. Discover and American Express do not specify a limit to the minimum purchase amount, but it must be the same as the one you set for Visa and MasterCard, which is ten dollars or less. Just remember, you must have the same minimum purchase amount across all card brands.

To review, you can tell customers that they have to spend more than a certain dollar amount if they want to pay by credit card at your business. You can set a minimum purchase amount of ten dollars or less. The minimum purchase amount does not apply to debit cards, only credit cards. If your location does not accept PIN debit, you are not allowed to set a credit card minimum purchase.
